what is sanitize with oxi on ge washer

I’m trying to understand what sanitize with oxi on my GE washer is. I’ve heard that it’s a setting on the washer that helps to kill bacteria and germs, but I’m not sure how it works. Is it a separate cycle or does it just add an extra step to the regular wash cycle? Does it require any special detergents or additives? Is it effective and safe for my clothes? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
