how to defrost kitchenaid bottom freezer

I have a KitchenAid bottom freezer that I need to defrost. I’m not sure what the best way to do this is. I’ve heard that some people just leave the door open and let the freezer defrost itself, but I’m not sure if that’s the best and safest way to do it. I’m also worried about the food inside and if it will be safe to eat after defrosting. Is there a better way to defrost my KitchenAid bottom freezer? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
