how to tell if washing machine lid switch is broken on a hotpoint

I recently purchased a Hotpoint washing machine and I’m having trouble figuring out if the lid switch is broken. I’ve noticed that the machine doesn’t seem to be starting when I close the lid and I’m concerned that this might be a sign that the lid switch is broken. I’m not sure how to tell if it is, though. Is there any way to tell if the lid switch is broken without taking the machine apart? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
